Sangrur is said to have been founded by Sanghu about five centuries back.The district remained a part of the Jind State till India gained independence in 1947. It attained fame for'Shaheed-E-Azam' Udham Singh and the Ghadar Movement. A part of the Patiala Kingdom and later PEPSU, Sangrur developed and became famous for its textiles, handicrafts, agriculture and education. It is home to various luminaries who have made Punjab proud in various fields; some of them are Shri Pritam Singh Rahi (Poet) and Shaheed Udham Singh (the revolutionary).
